AirDrop Overview

AirDrop is the simplest way to send files wirelessly to anyone around you. To share a file, simply drag it onto a person’s contact photo. Your Mac verifies that you want to send the file, then sends a request to the recipient. When the request is accepted, the file transfers to the person’s Downloads folder.

AirDrop doesn’t require setup or special settings; it uses peer-to-peer Wi-Fi between participating Mac computers and doesn’t require a wireless network infrastructure or base station. OS X Lion automatically discovers other Mac computers nearby that are using AirDrop. They appear in the Finder, and AirDrop displays the users’ contact photos. When you close the Finder window or click outside AirDrop, your Mac is no longer visible to other users. AirDrop can use an Apple ID to verify the identity of the person attempting to send you a file. If senders are in your Address Book and are signed in with their Apple IDs, their names will appear below their photos in AirDrop.
