You can fly around in space to harvest minerals and loot abandoned spaceships in a ship that you have created using an editor. Their is fully programmable 16-bit computers in the game so you can tell your ship how to behave, add things like laser turrets, or write software to trade in an MMO like world to other players. The game is set in an alternate universe where the space race never ended, and because of problems involving a deep sleep cell the year is 281 474 976 712 644 AD.
